Conducting science underwater involves increased task loading.
Scientific divers must be trained to work underwater with a higher level of proficiency that allows them to focus on the research task and data collection, in addition to the basics of diving. Scientific divers must be prepared to carry extensive equipment, accomplish numerous tasks, and maintain high safety standards simultaneously. AAUS Organizational Members & other scientific organizations require extensive training and specialized experience before authorizing their scientists and research support staff to conduct underwater research.
“To work efficiently, research diving requires that the diving itself be automatic. The diver must be well trained and comfortable under rigorous field conditions.” (From Foster, Dean & Deysher. 1985. Subtidal Techniques. In: Ecological Field Methods: Macroalgae. Littler & Littler, Eds.)
This increased proficiency will come from deepening your knowledge of dive science. Some of it will come from pool practice, open water check-out dives, and practice dives.
